A Medicare Supplement Insurance plan is sold by private companies. Medicare Supplement can help cover original health insurance that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like copayments, coinsurance,

With a Medicare Supplement policy, with most G plans you have a yearly deductible that must be met, then your Supplement will pay all other Medicare approved costs. A Medicare Supplement policy is different from a Medicare Advantage Plan. Original Medicare pays 80% of an approved charge, and then your Medicare Supplement will cover the remaining 20% after the deductible is met. Every company that offers a Medicare Supplement is required to offer the same coverage, with cost of premium being the only difference. How the process works is that the provider files with Original Medicare first, whatever amount is approved Original Medicare pays 80 of that cost then the balance is automatically filed with your Medicare Supplement which pays 20%. Any amount that exceeds what Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement pays is written off.

Medicare Supplements can be changed at any time during the year to another Medicare Supplement.. During Open Enrollment if a Medicare Supplement client decides they want to change to a Medicare Advantage they have the opportunity to try a Medicare Advantage Plan for one year, if they are not pleased with the Medicare Advantage a client can then go back to the company they left as a Medicare Supplement without being underwritten at the current rate, this is known as a Guarantee Issue.

Premiums become a major concern for many clients. Once their premiums increase to a certain amount, they feel is too expensive. It is to their advantage to change to Medicare Advantage and save their monthly premiums paid for Medicare Supplement in a “jar” and use it to pay the co-pays required by Medicare Advantage.

Medicare Supplement policies do not cover long term care, vision, dental care, hearing aids, eyeglasses or private -duty nursing.
