Medicare Part D (PDP)

Medicare offers prescription drug coverage to everyone. If you decide not to join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan when you become eligible for Medicare and do not have other creditable prescription drug coverage, you will accrue a penalty from Medicare. There are several Medicare-approved drug plans that vary in cost; it is best to have a list of your medications and dosing to have an accurate cost of what your medication will cost you monthly, and it is recommended that you have your drug plan re-evaluated during Open Enrollment of October 15 through December 7 due to companies changing the cost of medications, tiers, their formulary, and changes to the medication that you are currently prescribed.

Medicare Advantage may offer HMO or PPO coverage or another Medicare health plan that offers Medicare prescription drug coverage. You get all of your Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) coverage, as well as prescription drug coverage (Part D), through these plans. Medicare Advantage Plans with prescription drug coverage are sometimes called “MAPDs.” You must have Part A and Part B to join a Medicare Advantage Plan.

Each Medicare Prescription Drug Plan has its own list of covered drugs, known as a formulary. All Medicare drug plans place drugs into different “tiers” based on their formularies and any deductible amount due. Drugs in each tier have different costs.  Once you provide your agent with your medication list and dosage, they will enter all the information into a program that will provide the best plan and place for you to purchase your medication.
